Each year we welcome a group of fresh-faced fledging's as part of our Traineeship Program.
Usually in their first year out of high school, we watch these bright young things immerse themselves into a professional work environment and come out the other side with Certificate III in Business Admin, valuable insights on general business practices and a family of wingbirds who continue to mentor them even after they have flown the nest. It would be rude of us not to also mention, how greatly our flock benefits from having our trainees around - and although we are excited to see them succeed in their future endeavors, it will be very hard to see them go!
Watching our fledglings learn and grow is one of our greatest joys, and we are delighted to share with you some insights into life as a trainee from our 2019 fledglings themselves.
Introducing... 2019 Trainee's
Gabrielle - Digital Marketing and eCommerce Trainee
What I love about working at birdsnest: Being able to work between teams seamlessly on such a large range of projects. You aren’t confined to just your role; you can move around and work in different areas that interest you, and everyone is so accommodating and willing to help whenever you need it.
Most memorable moment at birdsnest: The first time I experienced the building flooding. It had been raining heavily for a large part of the day, and there were murmurs of how high the water was getting outside. Tubs were scattered around the building, catching stray water droplets that had made their way through the roof, and you could hear the occasional “thud” as a drop landed. It was getting towards the end of the day when chaos erupted. Water was inside, rushing through the building. Everyone leapt into action, working as one big team to get the water out, and stop it getting back in. It was the first time I’d seen the whole flock work together at once, and it was definitely an experience.
The biggest lesson of 2019: Everything you do is part of a larger goal. No matter how small or insignificant a task may seem, it contributes to the big picture in one way or another.
What advice would you give 2020 trainees: Get involved with as much as you can, and know that every skill you bring to the table is useful in some way, so don’t be afraid to suggest new things.
Every day at birdsnest brings something new, with different challenges, giving you the opportunity to grow and learn so many new skills in such a positive and supportive environment.
Sophie - Design Trainee
What I love most about my role: What I love most about my role is working with clothes and seeing the first inspiration to the end product for the season's range and watching it come to life for our customers.
What I love about working at birdsnest: What I love about working at birdsnest is my team, they are amazing at what they do and they always make the workday fun.
Most memorable moment at birdsnest: My most memorable moment at birdsnest was when our area started flooding and everybody jumped in to try to mop up the water before hitting the carpet and clothes… I will never forget that. Another moment that doesn't involve flooding was the design teams Christmas dinner - it was just a nice relaxing night with our team and new team members.
The biggest lesson of 2019: The biggest lesson of 2019 is not to let yourself get run down.
What advice would you give 2020 trainees: Be open to learning and have fun! You have an amazing year ahead of you, and amazing people to work with.

Maddy - Buying Trainee
What I love most about my role: It's super interesting! Not a lot of people know what a buyer is and I definitely didn't know this job existed until I started my traineeship, who knew you could get paid to shop?! Working as a trainee in this position has really opened my eyes to all the jobs the fashion industry provides and all the hard work and processes each garment goes through before going live on the website. It's very interesting watching all the teams work together to achieve the same goal of making sure our customers are happy, and seeing these results makes you feel really great.
What I love about working at birdsnest: Firstly, I loved working with such a supportive and friendly team and I love the birdsnest ethos of supporting each other and making sure everyone feels comfortable in their own skin. These values are definitely displayed inside the workplace and shared outward to our customers especially through our handwritten notes in dispatch.
Most memorable moment at birdsnest: One of my first experiences at birdnest would have been when the building started to flood in one of the first weeks that all the trainees started, it was very stressful but very amusing seeing everyone in the business rush to the problem areas and work together to stop the water from leaking in. We had mops, dustpan and brooms, blankets and towels to soak the water up and even water vacuums. This was definitely a memorable experience for all the trainees as we were quick to learn what working together in this company really looked like. Other special memories from this year also include our monthly bake-offs and all the yummy food, and the Christmas party.
The biggest lesson of 2019: You learn a lot of lessons and grow a lot in your first year out of school. I came into birdsnest very shy and having my first year in the workforce here has really allowed me to come out of my shell and build confidence through meeting new people and trying new things. I was also provided with many opportunities, one of which was being able to complete a cert III in business admin training which will be very useful in the future.
What advice would you give 2020 trainees: Throw yourself into your job and don't be afraid to ask questions and show interest in certain areas, this is your year to grow and learn and gain an understanding of potential jobs you may be interested in. Birdsnest is such a great place to do so as you'll be provided with so many opportunities and gain a lot of experience. You'll have so much support from the birdsnest team the whole way.
It's very interesting watching all the teams work together to achieve the same goal of making sure our customers are happy, and seeing these results makes you feel really great
Georgia - Warehouse and Merchandising
What I love most about my role: I love that my role is split into the warehouse and merchandising. It allows me to be up on my feet out in the warehouse, but also to be at my desk doing the merchandising side of things which gives me insight into how all the stock is moving. I have learnt about the stock inventory, operations, and merchandising side of things which I have really enjoyed, it keeps everyday interesting.
What I love about working at birdsnest: The feeling of belonging and being apart of something so amazing. Working at birdsnest you get to connect with such a diverse range of people that have so much to offer. Birdsnest really its own unique little family and everyone looks out for everyone. I love that no matter how bad your day starts once you walk through the doors into the nest you instantly feel comfortable and at ease.
I also love being able to have lunch with the other trainees, we have all become really close over the year.
Most memorable moment at birdsnest: My top three most memorable moments are: At the start of our traineeship the building flooded and it was all hands on deck to try and soak all the water up. I also had a little encounter with a spider that I'm sure my team won't be forgetting anytime soon. It was also a great day when the puppies came to the nest for valentines day!!!!
The biggest lesson of 2019: A lot has happened for me this year and so much has changed in such a short time. A few of my biggest lessons would be: live for now and be in the moment, enjoy everything you are surrounded by, don't take anything for granted, not even the little things because you will never know when it might be taken. Even if you are going through something horrible you have to make sure you don't bring others down, they also could be going through something... be kind always and tell people you appreciate them often.
What advice would you give 2020 trainees: Enjoy every moment of the traineeship, appreciate even the little things people do for you, be open to learning anything across the business, and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Working at birdsnest you get to connect with such a diverse range of people that have so much to offer. birdsnest really its own unique little family and everyone looks out for everyone.

What I love about working at birdsnest: I love all the beautiful people I've met and gotten to know while here, it was great to see all aspects of the business and what goes on behind the scenes in the fashion industry - I've loved being a part of it all. It's so nice to see a whole team of people that are ultimately working towards the same goals for the business, trying their hardest, and encouraging others to do the same.
Most memorable moment at birdsnest: When it was all hands on deck when the nest flooded! Everyone so selflessly stopped what they were doing and pitched in any way they could.
The biggest lesson of 2019: "Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life" - it's honestly true. My biggest lesson was realising there truly are jobs out there that are so fun and engaging that it doesn't feel like 'work' at all.

Elise - Public Relation & Marketing Trainee
What I love most about my role: I have been able to be spread across many different roles. Each day is always different and I love being able to work in a workplace that is never the same. This has allowed me to get creative in social media and come up with Instagram stories and even put my own little videos together. I also really enjoy getting creative and doing flatlays each week. Birdsnest has allowed me to really challenge myself and given me a good first step on my journey.
Most memorable moment at birdsnest: For me, the most memorable moment of my time at birdsnest was walking in on our first day all shy and out of my comfort zone with a bunch of people that I didn't know, not knowing much about the business at all and then finally walking in being amazed by the size of the business and how many people were. I then went weeks passing people that all knew my name and not having a clue what theirs were. Throughout the year all of the once stranger trainees all became like a family to me, we all ate lunch together, went to tafe together and even danced together. Birdsnest has taught me so many life lessons and I am so glad to have been able to be apart of the 2019 traineeship.
The biggest lesson of 2019: The biggest lesson I have learned this year is to be open to anything and apply myself to any opportunities that may come my way and to work hard because it pays off in the end.
What advice would you give 2020 trainees: Work hard and apply yourself because it all pays off in the end. Be open to anything and engage in conversation with new people because birdsnest is the perfect environment to do so. Really make the most of your time because before you know it, it's all over.
